The Competent Crew course is ideal for a range of students, from complete beginners to those with experience in dinghy sailing or cruising. It is not difficult and suitable for students of all ages and fitness levels. The aim is to give you an enjoyable and basic introduction to yachts and sailing. Our instructor’s are patient and friendly so you can come on your own, as a couple / family / group.
The syllabus provides a good foundation in seamanship, boat-handling, safety at sea and onboard a vessel, nautical terms, rope work, sail handling, ‘rules of the road’, helmsmanship and general duties above and below deck. When you have completed this course, you will be a confident, useful crew member of a cruising yacht.
Successful completion of this course will give you the minimum requirements needed to qualify for the RYA Day Skipper course.
Throughout the week the following key points will be covered and taught as required by the RYA syllabus.
- Knowledge of nautical terms and parts of the boat
- Sail handling
- Rope work
- Fire precautions and fire fighting
- Personal safety equipment
- Man overboard
- Emergency equipment
- Rules of the road
- Helmsmanship and sailing
‘The whole family thoroughly enjoyed the sailing course (Competent Crew). The instructor was very easy going, with good instructing techniques and I have already recommended the school to friends and family who live in the area.’
