You can gain entry to this course if you have completed the RYA Competent Crew course or sufficient previous experience. This course will teach you basic skippering techniques and boat-handling skills in a variety of mooring situations. Under the supervision of your instructor, you will be put in charge of short passages and cover subjects such as deck work, sail trim, emergency situations and man overboard drill.

The Day Skipper course also initiates learning in subjects such as meteorology, engine checks, preparation for sea, passage planning, navigation and pilotage and further rules of the road so that on completion of the course, a successful Day Skipper will be able to skipper a small yacht in familiar waters by day.

Students completing the course successfully qualify for the International of Competence (ICC); British Citizens and/or UK residents are able to apply. This document may be required if you sail or charter yachts and powerboats in certain European countries, such as Spain - application forms are available from your Instructor.

The following are the key points from the RYA syllabus and cover what you will by taught during your week.

  • Preparation for sea

  • Rules of the road
  • Emergency situations

‘I brought my two teenage children along during my Day Skipper course, they did Competent Crew at the same time. I did have concerns at first, but they really enjoyed it, they were treated the same as the other students and loved getting stuck in. They will come back with me to continue training in the summer.’
Alan Tompson, February 2011
