RYA Day Skipper

Complete the RYA day skipper course with us in Spain. This practical course gives you a chance to take on short passages with advice and instruction.

Course:
Day Skipper non-tidal
Suggested minimum pre-course experience: 5 days, 100 miles, 4 night hours aboard the sailing vessel
Assumed knowledge: Basic navigation and sailing ability
Course content: Boat handling, seamanship, navigation and pilotage
After course: Can skipper a small yacht in familiar waters by day

You can gain entry to this course if you have completed the RYA Competent Crew course or sufficient previous experience. This course will teach you basic skippering techniques and boat-handling skills in a variety of mooring situations. Under the supervision of your instructor, you will be put in charge of short passages and cover subjects such as deck work, sail trim, emergency situations and man overboard drill.

The Day Skipper course also initiates learning in subjects such as meteorology, engine checks, preparation for sea, passage planning, navigation and pilotage and further rules of the road so that on completion of the course, a successful Day Skipper will be able to skipper a small yacht in familiar waters by day.

Students completing the course successfully qualify for the International of Competence (ICC); British Citizens and/or UK residents are able to apply. This document may be required if you sail or charter yachts and powerboats in certain European countries, such as Spain - application forms are available from your Instructor.

The following are the key points from the RYA syllabus and cover what you will by taught during your week.

  • Preparation for sea
  • Navigation
  • Pilotage
  • Meteorology
  • Passage making
  • Rules of the road
  • Emergency situations
  • Yacht handling under sail
  • Yacht handling under power

“Thoroughly enjoyed the day skipper course, excellent instruction and very informative. Thanks Richard, we’ll be back.” Alan, March 2009

“The Instructor was Fantastic, he knows the right amount of teaching while letting you get ‘hands on’ experience.  I turned up as the only female on the course and felt immediately at ease with everyone on the boat.  I would recommend anyone thinking of gaining any type of experience/qualifications to choose Serenity Sailing as you will come away with some fantastic knowledge and very happy and fun memories’' Jill October 2009
